I visited Jocelyn at her new salon in Woollahra recently, where she explained that a lot of our chronic skin issues come down to a damaged skin barrier. Even though I’ve been doing this beauty thing for years now, I still had a lot of confusion over what a skin barrier even WAS, let alone how to fix it. So I asked Jocelyn to give me the lowdown.
What is your skin barrier?
“It’s a mix of dead skin cells, oil and sweat that resides on the skins surface and performs a protective function,” explains Jocelyn. “You might know it as the acid mantle or hydro-lipidic film. It regulates skin function, and maintains the skins resilience”. Essentially, it’s a shield that keeps nasties like pollution and crap you come against on the daily out, and the good stuff, like moisture, in.
