Jocelyn Petroni, beauty therapist

The lauded beauty specialist knows how to make you truly glow.

As one of Australia’s pre-eminent skin aestheticians, Sydney-based Jocelyn Petroni has forged a reputation few in her profession can match – she has a roster of high-profile, ever-glowing clients and dynamic proprietary techniques that give dazzling results. Impressive in an industry that is otherwise quite slow-moving. She uses hands and heart to make skin glow as if it were lit from the inside. Petroni is also a reiki master who practises Tibetan Buddhism and meditates daily. She drinks Vida Glow Natural Marine Collagen and is famed for delivering skin treatments that feel like meditations (she says she often meditates during a treatment), which is testament to the powerful mind-skin connection. The queen of radiance has also recently become a mother. We asked the early- adopter what it feels like for everyone else to be finally catching on to the idea of looking at beauty from a holistic point of view.

WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR HOLISTIC BEAUTY COME FROM?

My passion for skin health began when I was a child. My dad taught me how to look after skin holistically. We grew up camping on the beach and Dad was a fan of sunrise ocean swims. After a swim, we’d sit together on the foreshore and scrub each other’s backs with the sand. He also loved a cold rinse after a warm shower and taught me to cover my skin in oil to nourish it – these were valuable lessons.

HOW IS THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY CHANGED IN RECENT TIMES?

Right now, the beauty industry is really celebrating a holistic view of beauty and self-care, which is wonderful to be a part of. Beauty is more than skin deep, it’s about feeling beautiful and a confident state of mind. Glowing skin always shines through – I believe in embracing the lines on our faces and every unique imperfection. The goal isn’t perfection. As a child, I was very tactile. I knew then the healing power of touch. That knowledge has informed some of the philosophies we use at Jocelyn Petroni in Woollahra today. Particularly in our “loving touch” protocol, which dictates how every client is treated.

HOW MUCH DOES WHAT’S HAPPENING ON THE INSIDE AFFECT THE OUTSIDE?

I really believe in a balanced diet that doesn’t buy into trends or extreme diet choices. As with anything, education is always the most important thing. Knowledge will help you make the right choices every time.

WHAT IMPACT CAN SUPPLEMENTATION HAVE?

Supplements can be an important part of a healthy diet, especially ones that focus on optimal skin and nail health. A healthy diet is one that includes nourishing your body internally with a high healthy oil content. Marine collagen is another supplement that helps skin. It stimulates fibroblast cells to produce elastin within the dermis layer of the skin, thickening and plumping the surface of the skin from within. It’s something I take every morning when I’m breastfeeding my daughter, Georgia – it’s easily added to a glass of water. Since it’s hydrolysed, Vida Glow Natural Marine Collagen travels through the bloodstream and feeds into the deeper layers of the skin. The science behind Vida Glow is so impressive that I quickly see visible results in the skin and nails of my clients.

WHAT MAKES YOUR TREATMENTS SO BESPOKE?

Skin is as unique as a fingerprint, and every person needs a personalised approach, but anyone can benefit from prevention. Moisturise and wear sunscreen – those are rules for everybody to live by. But incorporating reiki into treatments is powerful and requires a real connection. In nearly 15 years of doing this job, I’ve seen how effective it is. It can lower cortisol levels and increase repair and regeneration of the skin.
