You’re most likely already acquainted from swigs of a morning orange juice, but if you haven’t tried the topical version of this water-soluble vitamin, it’s worth introducing to your daily skincare regime while keeping in mind a few tricks of the trade.
WHAT DOES VITAMIN C DO?
Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid, is a popular ingredient used in anti-ageing and hydration products.
“It helps to accelerate skin turnover and offers deep moisturisation to assist in minimising the appearance of fine lines,” says Sydney-based beautician Jocelyn Petroni.

WHAT PERCENTAGE OF VITAMIN C IS GOOD FOR THE SKIN?
Keep in mind that vitamin C comes in different concentration levels.
“There is a maximum capacity of vitamin C a person’s skin can absorb, and beyond this it can become irritating or sit on the surface of the skin,” says Petroni.
To avoid this, choose a concentration between 10-25%, which is enough to see results sooner while the active ingredients work to keep the skin firm and protect it against free radicals.
CAN YOU MIX VITAMIN C WITH OTHER ACTIVE INGREDIENTS?
Vitamin C works great with other active ingredients such as vitamin A and E (also an anti-oxidant) and ferulic acid to boost the anti-oxidising benefits.
“It also works wonders with sunscreen,” adds Petroni. “Vitamin C can break down UV light and lessen its effects, so it can increase your sunscreen’s protection.”
