Bedtime Beauty Stories: How Jocelyn Petroni gets ready for bed
Australia’s celebrity facialist Jocelyn Petroni knows the value of beauty sleep. She tells beauty editor Kelsey Ferencak her bedtime beauty secrets, including her exact nighttime skincare routine.
Hello and welcome to our new editorial series Bedtime Beauty Stories. It’s a space for talented individuals to share how they get ready for slumber, including ways to wind down, nighttime beauty rituals and go-to remedies for falling asleep. We begin with one of Australia’s most in-demand skin experts, Jocelyn Petroni.
Jocelyn Petroni is one of the country’s leading premium beauty experts and the woman behind the complexion’s of Miranda Kerr, Rachel Finch and even Michelle Bridges. The Sydney-based holistic skin therapist offers truly meditative experiences blending classic methods with spiritual techniques, helping her clients drift into a new realm of relaxation. So, who better to speak to about pre-bed rituals?
WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO TO WIND DOWN BEFORE BED?
Since having my baby Georgia, I have realized the importance of a bed time routine and how much this impacts our sleep. My routine starts with hers, I shower with her, we brush our teeth together and our skin is covered in all my lotions and potions.
AND THE LAST THING YOU DO BEFORE YOU GO TO SLEEP?
I meditate. Once I am comfy and relaxed in bed I focus on being present without thinking about the past or the future. I turn inwards and focus on my heart and how I am feeling, without judgment. I try to sit with this and just be spacious, relaxed and present.
TAKE US THROUGH YOUR NIGHTTIME BEAUTY ROUTINE…
I wash my face in the shower using Votary Super Seed Cleansing Oil ($120, at Sephora), followed by Ultraceuticals Ultra Balancing Gel Cleanser ($83, at David Jones). The first product on my face is always eye cream (sometimes I apply a Vitamin C or Vitamin A serum underneath), tonight’s it’s La Mer The Eye Balm Intense ($315, at La Mer).
Currently to my face I apply an active night serum, like Ultra MD Ultimate A Refining Serum (at Ultraceuticals), followed by a hydrating face oil like Hunter Lab Lipid Vitamin Face Oil ($68, at Adore Beauty) underneath the richest, most thirst quenching moisturiser I can find, like Gernetic Synchro Regenerating and Nutritive Cream (at Gernetic). Hand cream is essential for my dry hands and I love Chanel La Crème Main ($87, at Myer).
DO YOU TAKE ANY SUPPLEMENTS OR SLEEP-AIDS?
I take Vida Glow Marine Collagen ($59.95, at Adore Beauty) morning and night, for deep internal hydration. Sometimes I will opt for a guided meditation if I am feeling like I need a little inspiration or a caring voice.
WHAT DO YOU SLEEP ON?
I sleep on a contoured travel pillow with a 100% cotton pillow case. My hubby and I both wear eye masks and ear plugs to block out light and external noise, we are currently wearing Slip Sleep Mask ($55, at Sephora).
WHAT’S YOUR STANCE ON TECHNOLOGY BEFORE BED?
Since having Georgia we have stopped watching TV at night altogether. I love the peace and calm in our home, the conversations that are inspired and ambience of a sleeping baby. I used to be on my laptop until late every night and now I would never open up my laptop or get on my phone once I have switched off for the day. It is particularly nice in the evening without blue screens or a flickering television keeping us switched on.
DO YOU HAVE A PREFERRED OR GO-TO LATE NIGHT SNACK (IF ANY)?
Yes, I love an Arnott’s Milk Arrowroot if I wake at night from hunger. It’s light and milky and fills the spot.
WHAT TIME DO YOU USUALLY HOP INTO BED
I am in bed by 8pm and asleep by 8:30pm.
WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU CAN’T DRIFT OFF OR HAVE TROUBLE SLEEPING – DO YOU HAVE A GO-TO FIX?
I love listening to Clarissa Pinkola Estes Bedtime Stories (at Audible). She is the author of Women Who Run With The Wolves ($16.25, at Booktopia) and her mythical stories spoken in her dreamy voice always send me off to sleep.
